Accomplishments

For more than 40 years, the Alki Community Council has been powered by volunteers—neighbors who stepped forward, showed up, and helped make Alki safer, more connected, more beautiful, and more vibrant.

From restoring shoreline parks to helping build children's playgrounds, to expanding public-safety efforts and reviving beloved community celebrations, these accomplishments reflect decades of grassroots leadership.

This page honors the major projects shaped by volunteers—and the people whose work defined our neighborhood.

Seattle's Statue of Liberty in Alki – Plaza Renovation (2007–2008)

A major community-wide collaboration, led by Paul & Libby Carr, resulted in the recasting of Seattle's Statue of Liberty in Alki and the construction of a new plaza. The Carrs coordinated hundreds of donors, volunteers, and local partners, supported by detailed on-the-ground project management from David & Eilene Hutchinson.

More than 3,000 engraved bricks and plaques were sold to fund the restoration. The statue was rededicated in 2007; the plaza opened in 2008.
Today, Statue of Liberty Plaza is maintained by the Alki Community Council in conjunction with Seattle Parks, ensuring ongoing basic care and preservation.

Alki Playfield Rebuild (1997)

ACC partnered with public agencies, private donors, and individual contributors to rebuild and modernize the original playfield near Alki Elementary—an effort that laid the groundwork for today's school-connected playground and has served generations of children.

Alki Trail Extension

Volunteer leadership helped champion extending the shoreline trail to Constellation Park, improving walkability, pedestrian access, and waterfront connectivity.

Pocket Parks Creation

Weather Watch Park, Cormorant Cove, and Constellation Park were created through community advocacy, volunteer vision, design, and long-term stewardship.

Schmitz Park Restoration and Preservation

Decades of invasive species removal and habitat restoration by committed neighbors and organized volunteers helped protect the park's preserved old-growth forest environment.

Safe Streets & Pedestrian Safety

Multiple generations of volunteers advanced long-term efforts from Alki Point to Admiral Way to improve crosswalks, implement traffic calming measures, and create safer, pedestrian-focused corridors.

Harbor Avenue Improvements

The Greater Harbor 2000 group championed a greener, safer, more walkable, and tree-lined waterfront corridor.

Community Arts & Celebrations

The Alki Community Council has launched several beloved neighborhood traditions: helped launch and created the early Alki Art Fair, produced the one-time Alki Summer Festival, and originated the annual Alki Holiday Celebration in 2025.

ACC volunteers continue to support and uplift community arts, including the Alki Art Walk, Alki Holiday Celebration, and seasonal neighborhood activations.
