Responding to the July 4th Chaos

The evening and overnight of the 4th of July turned ugly for many Alki residents and businesses, with some visitors weaponizing fireworks against each other and the community and property. We hear you and have been working with you to collect your stories and video to take to Seattle city and police officials to effect change going forward. Next week ACC president Charlotte Starck and several community and business members will be meeting with CM Saka, Police Chief Barnes, CARE Chief Barden, and the head of the Mayor’s public safety team to discuss what happened that night on Alki and begin to build solutions to avoid this kind of activity during future events.

Parks and Rec Survey Results!

Back in 2012, budget cuts brought recreational programming at the Alki Community Center and Alki Bathhouse to a near standstill. This year, we've been meeting with Seattle Parks & Recreation to explore how more community programming could return to Alki. Encouraging Progress with Parks Department

Recreation brings neighbors together. Our hope is to see the Alki Community Center and Bathhouse once again become places where people of all ages can gather, learn, play, and connect and nurture individual and community health and wellness.

We’re happy to report that our recent meeting with Parks leadership was productive and encouraging. The Parks team recognizes the community's strong interest in bringing more recreation back to Alki. They're now exploring what may be possible while balancing staffing, facility availability, existing childcare partnerships, Lifelong Recreation (50+) programs, and joint use with Alki Elementary. There isn't a timeline yet, but this was an important step forward and we anticipate news this Fall per our last conversation.

Parks will continue evaluating programming opportunities over the coming months and update us on their progress on a strategy and scope of programs by Fall.

A special thank you to former ACC President Liesa Rose, whose knowledge of Alki's recreation history has been an invaluable resource throughout these conversations.

Coming Events

A quick reminder there is no General Membership Meeting in July or August as we take a brief summer break. Even so, we're continuing to meet with City departments and move neighborhood projects forward on your behalf.

Alki Art Fair - July 17-19 Happening NOW!! Take in the colorful views while strolling the promenade, as you eat and shop among the expansive lineup of artists, makers and performers and celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of our local arts and culture. https://alkiartfair.org/
Tribal Canoe Journey Alki Beach Stopover - July 29 1pm On the afternoon of July 29th, 110-120 tribal canoes will stop at Alki Beach during their southbound journey. This year's journey is titled Paddle to Nisqually Medicine Creek Potlatch. Next year's event will be held in Alaskan waters, so be sure not to miss it. Glass Float Hunt - Aug 7-14 This week-long scavenger hunt transforms West Seattle into a treasure map. The event is co-hosted by the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the West Seattle Junction Association. Fifty glass floats are hidden in local shops, while another 50 are placed in parks throughout the area. All come with cryptic clues posted on the hunt's website. ACC Volunteer Social - Aug TBD We'll also be sharing details soon about our August Volunteer Social, a casual opportunity to meet neighbors, learn about current initiatives, and explore ways to get involved.

Alki Beach Pride - Aug 15 12pm-8pm(corrected) This annual festival unites Seattle’s LGBTQ+ community and celebrates queer culture in a fun, urban, inclusive, and family-friendly event. https://www.alkibeachpride.org
